12 Days in Jerusalem

The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Israel’s national museum, is the country’s most prestigious cultural institution. Head curator Alex Ward extended an invitation to the Karlssonwilker studio to spend 12 eventful days in the nation’s capital.

Lucky for me, Hjaltis’ wife was not a fan of the middle east trip. So, Jan and I headed to Jerusalem to create the first-ever ‘real-time’ design project for the Israel Museum’s department of architecture and design. The team gave us free rein, but our goal was to create an exhibition showcasing 12 large format pieces (a poster a day), along with excerpts and snapshots of each respective day. The project also featured commentary about our daily experiences.

As designers, often our perception can be unrealistic, as we sit safely at our desks, meticulously crafting every detail of communication to seemingly absolute perfection. ‘Real-time’ projects are about seeking experiences that challenge us to create work that is fast, raw, imperfect, and sometimes questionable.
